about
I had another project called "4 Track Fake Bands" in the mid-90's, and this song is from that period. I wrote and recorded and played all instruments on 60ish songs around that time, but many of the cassettes have deteriorated or are lost. I only gave out about 9 cassettes to musician friends for camaraderie or trying to impress. Some are left, and a few of 4 Track Fake Bands's songs were pretty good, and this one was always one of my favorites.
This song is about artistic or musical ideas. Where do they come from? For me, they're like these fleeting lights in my mental periphery. Orbiting like satellites but disappearing if you look directly at them. Moving targets. Hard to catch and hard to let go of all at the same time. When you're riding them, it's the best, kinda leaving and entering the present all at the same time. And the chase is pretty good, too.
Photo is from 1997 in front of the "bachelorette" studio apartment I wrote, recorded and played all of the instruments for "4 Track Fake Bands." Look how happy I am!
Finally a place to be alone sans parents or roommates (I was 23) or boyfriend or clingy friends with my mind, my heart, my tools, and no close neighbors. I LOVED it. All I did was write and record. I wanted it so bad. I blew up. It was behind the ceramic studio in Dana Point, CA, I worked at and eventually owned.
'Shining Bright' was recorded days later.
lyrics
Satellite
I'm alive, I'm alive, I heard it on the radio
Dancing through a vast eternal night
Falling through a black and endless sky
In-between your ideas on your favorite satellite
Rising above what is rhythm and rhyme
Did you see right through it, did you stop and stare?
I'm in, I'm out, I lost my atmosphere
Left it in another state of mind
Staring at a wall of flashing lights
Never asked the question but that's alright
Rising above what is rhythm and rhyme
What is read in-between the lines
Is it time yet? Is anybody prepared?
Can you see right through it, did you stop and stare?
So light, so lost, no body, no breath, no mind
No penetrating this black magnetic field
No days, no nights, no wonder we feel so blind
In-between your ideas on your favorite satellite
Rising above what is rhythm and rhyme
Can you see right through it, did you stop and stare?

This site is 4 track demos. Hi, I'm
Cecily, and this is my project, the 4 Track Phantoms, a kind of diary of a free range singer, songwriter, musician.
I write songs and record them playing all of the instruments myself on my 4 track cassette portable studio. And reflect on the songwriting process, subject matter, and recording process....more
