about
This is the original version of a very old song- never really fleshed it out because it is, admittedly, pretty low. It seems raw and basic by guitar standards, and I like to think I have a grown a bit since writing this 92ish. That and I wish I could lively up the power chords, sounds a little dated and one dimensional. But I wanted to play around with the Maudlin/ Phaedra vocal layering, so I resurrected it. So here's Maudlin, the lead vocal, feeling all empowered in feeling sorry for herself, and Phaedra, the background vocal, naively sweet, wailing. Definitely some mad at the world/ disappointed in my fellow human beings vibes here. Trying to put on a pretty face when seething with contempt on the inside. But I suppose we've all been there. I like how this came out. Don't we all have a morbid, dysfunctional, alcoholic alter ego tempered by our sweet side? And the whistling
Artist credit alert: lyrics. I wrote this song when my 89-92 A&R music business career was coming to an end. One of the bands I very much wanted to get signed was called Wood & Smoke. My lyrics borrow A LOT from a song of theirs called "Cold Heart." Lyrics written by Gary Williams:
Somebody told me, all things happen for a reason
Somebody told me, that I change like a season
Somebody hold me, stop this cold heart from freezing
Tell me why
Genius. Genius Gary Williams, not sure where you are now, but in the very unlikely event I make money from this song, I will find you and honor you accordingly. And in the equally unlikely event, that you come across this post and homage, thank you. You are are a brilliant songwriter, and I hope you have experienced and continue to experience success in your endeavors.
lyrics
Cold Heart
I stare at these walls every day
Go out and smile through clenched teeth every night
Someone's running as I speak and I'm wishing it was me
And the waves are at my feet but it's too cold to go in deep
But I'll try again to keep the faith
But this town has brought me to my knees
I'm afraid my cold heart is gonna freeze
I try, I really do, to get along
I pretend it's all right when it's all wrong
Cause someone's dream is coming true and I want mine to
I am humble most of the time, but I want more, gimme mine
I'll try again to keep the faith
But this town has brought me to my knees
I'm afraid my cold heart is gonna freeze
Well a dog has more to say than half the people I see today
Cause he's never told a lie and there is nothing he has to hide
But I'll try again to keep the faith
But this town has brought me to my knees
I'm afraid my cold heart is gonna freeze

I write songs and record them playing all of the instruments myself on my 4 track cassette portable studio. And reflect on the songwriting process, subject matter, and recording process....more
