Ever been to a funeral and wondered why you didn't just tell someone what you feel before they died? Me too. But it's not that easy. What can you say? In 2016, I came across an article about how the woman who Leonard Cohen wrote "Bird on a Wire" about was lying on her deathbed. And he visited her. And it was special and wonderful and who could imagine that conversation. And then a few months later he died.

And this song just wrote itself. So it goes out to the conversations in our heads, the lost lovers, the crumpled up letters, the abandoned attempts to reconnect, all of that. I have had a few of those, that's for sure.
